Data Erasure
Shock 1.
I had one of the most eye opening experiences about the ignorance of data erasure at a national company last winter. This company needed to comply with HIPPA as well as many other data security standards.
They had to erase a storage array from a well-known storage manufacturer.
The storage manufacturer quoted them $14,500 to have the drives erased and challenged us with why they would ever use anyone else.
As it turns out, there are several very good reasons why:

- They had not erased the battery backup cache which still contained client data.
- They had a “dial home” feature in the controller that allowed the manufacturer to monitor the system; that contained their IP address and password.
- In the back of the cabinet there was a nice power strip. It had an Ethernet connection on it and the HVAC vendor monitored electrical loads remotely. That power strip contained network login credentials.

Shock 2.
Last year I was at a major company (household name) and they were in the process of shredding drives. I wanted to work with this business so I approached the VP of IT, Data center Manager, and Manager of End-User Technology. They said they wanted the best in security, so they shredded everything. I began to realize that they didn’t know what they didn’t know.
I asked them what they did with the servers and they said we shred the hard drives. When I asked what happened to the rest of the server, they said it didn’t matter- probably going back to DELL. I walked over to the server, opened the top and pointed to the back right corner where it houses a DRAC Card (Dell Remote Access.) I asked if I could turn the server on and it was there where I showed them their company's IP Address and login credentials. They couldn’t believe it; there was a violation of their company’s password policy by letting it get out and also a clear no brainer in the security world that you would want that erased- WITH DOCUMENTATION.
The list of where embedded media is, goes on forever. There is no industry standard Blue Book that an ITAD Provider can use to know where all your hidden media is located. And the pay rate at most recyclers is entry level.
